External Epoxy Coated Steel Pipe

Product Overview

The External Epoxy Coated Steel Pipe is a critical asset protection solution designed to shield steel pipelines from environmental degradation. This product features a steel pipe (seamless, LSAW, or SSAW) coated on the exterior with a specialized Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE) or modified epoxy resin. Acting as the first line of defense, this coating creates a tough, chemically bonded barrier that isolates the steel from soil, moisture, and corrosive elements. It is the industry standard for buried pipelines, piling, and infrastructure exposed to harsh atmospheric conditions.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Superior Corrosion Protection: The epoxy layer provides an impermeable barrier against soil stress, groundwater, acids, alkalis, and salts, significantly extending the pipeline's service life (often exceeding 50 years).

  • Cathodic Disbondment Resistance: A defining characteristic of FBE coatings is their ability to resist "peeling" or lifting from the steel surface under the influence of Cathodic Protection (CP) currents. This ensures that if the coating is damaged, corrosion does not spread underneath the film.

  • Mechanical Durability: The thermosetting epoxy coating offers high abrasion resistance and impact strength, protecting the pipe during transportation, handling, and backfilling in rocky soil.

  • Temperature Resistance: Standard FBE coatings can operate continuously at temperatures up to 85°C–100°C, making them suitable for hot water lines and heated process pipelines.

  • Adhesion Strength: Applied via electrostatic spray to heated steel, the powder fuses to the surface, creating a bond that is chemically stronger than simple mechanical adhesion.

Technical Specifications

  • Product Name: External Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE) Coated Pipe

  • Base Pipe Materials: API 5L (Gr. B to X80), ASTM A106, ASTM A53, EN 10217.

  • Coating Standards:

    • ISO 21809-2:2026: International standard for single-layer FBE coatings.

    • CSA Z245.20: Canadian standard widely used for pipeline coatings.

    • GB/T 39636-2020: Chinese standard for fusion-bonded epoxy external coatings.

    • SY/T 0315: Technical specification for steel pipeline FBE coatings.

  • Coating Thickness:

    • Standard (Single Layer): 250 µm – 400 µm (10 – 16 mils).

    • Heavy Duty / Dual Layer: 450 µm – 1000 µm (18 – 40 mils) for harsh environments.

  • Operating Temperature: -30°C to +85°C (Standard); up to 120°C (High-Temp variants).

  • Color: Typically Black, Grey, or Red (for fire water identification).

Applications

External epoxy coatings are utilized across diverse infrastructure sectors:

  • Oil & Gas Transmission: The primary choice for onshore and offshore pipelines due to its compatibility with Cathodic Protection systems.

  • Water Infrastructure: Buried potable water mains and sewage force mains.

  • Piling & Construction: Steel H-piles and sheet pilings used in bridges, seawalls, and foundations (often coated to ASTM A950/A972 standards).

  • Fire Protection: External coating for fire water lines to prevent external corrosion in buried or submerged applications.

  • Industrial: Process piping exposed to corrosive atmospheres or chemical spills.
